While the Taiwan government has embraced a progressive stance toward LGBT rights, especially through legalization of same-sex marriage and the adoption of educational policy aimed at promoting LGBT rights in the schools, there is little sense of the role of English language teaching (ELT) in this issue. Since English study is important in Taiwan, this project responded by employing hidden curriculum theory to address the possible role of English language teaching (ELT) materials authored and used in Taiwan in reproducing or disrupting the marginalization of LGBT people. This study operationalized the target hidden curriculum as instantiations of norms implicit within sexuality representations such as depictions of dating behaviors and family structures.

Bilateral cochlear implant (BiCI) usage makes binaural benefits a possibility for implant users. Yet for BiCI users, limited access to interaural time difference (ITD) cues and reduced saliency of interaural level difference (ILD) cues restricts perceptual benefits of spatially separating a target from masker sounds. The present study explored whether magnifying ILD cues improves intelligibility of masked speech for BiCI listeners in a "symmetrical-masker" configuration, which ensures that neither ear benefits from a long-term positive target-to-masker ratio (TMR) due to naturally occurring ILD cues.

Introduction: The generalizability of neuroimaging and cognitive biomarkers in their sensitivity to detect preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) and power to predict progression in large, multisite cohorts remains unclear.

Method: Longitudinal demographics, T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cognitive scores of 3036 cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults (amyloid beta [Aβ]-negative/positive [A-/A+]: 1270/1558) were included. Cross-sectional and longitudinal cognition and medial temporal lobe (MTL) structural measures were extracted.

Tau exhibits change in both spatial extent and density of pathology along the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum with each aspect contributing to the overall burden of pathological tau. Nevertheless, studies using Tau PET have measured either magnitude using standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) or extent using number of Tau+ regions. We hypothesized that combining these two dimensions into a single measure of Magnitude and eXtent, Tau-MaX, would provide improved quantification of global tau burden as well as allowing for a region-agnostic measure of global tau burden that does not require a pre-specified region of interest (ROI) or meta-ROI.

Estuaries often experience multiple water quality impairments including nitrogen enrichment and elevated fecal pollution. These pollutant sources are often linked and difficult to characterize, especially in multiple use watersheds, hindering the identification of effective mitigation steps. Tillamook Bay (Oregon, USA) has a mixed-use watershed including many potential nutrient and fecal bacteria sources due to agricultural activities, human development, and local wildlife populations.

Introduction: Treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is poorly understood in younger women as the majority of prolapse research is conducted in the older population. There is an urgent need to evaluate conservative POP treatments for management in younger women due to high surgical complications and reoperation rates.

Methods: Systematic review of the literature following PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes disease through complex interactions between viral and host proteins, with the PI3K signaling pathway playing a key role. Proteins like AKT, IQGAP1, and MMP16 are involved in HPV-related cancer development. Traditional methods for studying protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are labor-intensive and time-consuming.

HIV incidence among transgender women remains high and disproportionately impacts young, Black, and Latina transgender women. Data on preferred PrEP modalities among this population are limited. Participants in The LITE Cohort completed a survey module on PrEP modality preferences during 24-month study visits.

Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), a vital chaperone involved in the folding and stabilization of various cellular proteins, regulates key functions in many tumor cells. In the context of gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), where HSP90's role remains largely unexplored, we aimed to investigate the significance of HSP90 inhibitor, AUY922, in regulating the YAP1/TEAD pathway and its association with the tumor immune microenvironment (TME). Our results showed that AUY922 effectively inhibited GAC aggressiveness in both the invitro and invivo models, induced apoptosis, and cell-cycle arrest.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by a long preclinical stage during which molecular markers of amyloid beta and tau pathology rise, but there is minimal neurodegeneration or cognitive decline. Previous literature suggests that measures of brain function might be more sensitive to neuropathologic burden during the preclinical stage of AD than conventional measures of macrostructure, such as cortical thickness. However, among studies that used resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) acquisitions with Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) contrast, most employed connectivity-based analytic approaches, which discard information about the amplitude of spontaneous brain activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses a specific fungus that survives in the acidic environment of the human stomach, potentially causing conditions like ulcers and gastritis.
  • In research on mice, it was found that this fungus can induce localized gastritis without affecting the intestine, highlighting the stomach's vulnerability to fungal infections.
  • The study identified immune responses and gene expressions linked to fungal infection in a specific stomach region, suggesting the importance of further research on how this infection interacts with the host's immune system and microbiota.

  • The study investigates how ocean acidification (OA) combined with river inputs affects water quality and acidification in estuarine environments, particularly in Tillamook Bay, Oregon.
  • Researchers collected data on carbonate chemistry and river conditions over a year to understand the influences of human development and natural processes on acidification.
  • Findings reveal that while riverine acidification significantly impacts areas with more human development, emissions-driven OA is the main contributor to acidification, making local management strategies less effective in addressing these issues.

Attribution of the ocean acidification (OA) signal in estuarine carbonate system observations is necessary for quantifying the impacts of global anthropogenic emissions on water quality, and informing managers of the efficacy of potential mitigation options. We present an analysis of observational data to characterize dynamics and drivers of seasonal carbonate system variability in two seagrass habitats of Puget Sound, WA, USA, and estimate how carbon accumulations due to anthropogenic emissions interact with these drivers of carbonate chemistry to determine seasonally resolved rates of acidification in these habitats. Three independent simulations of accumulation from 1765 to 2100 were run using two previously published methods and one novel method for estimation.

Purpose: Chronic pain is a complex biopsychosocial experience, and rehabilitation helps people to manage pain, and restore valued life roles. Evidence suggests that more positive outcomes occur when clients perceive their rehabilitation to be meaningful. People with chronic pain describe rehabilitation as personally-meaningful when they develop a genuine connection with a credible therapist who they see as a guiding partner, and when rehabilitation holds personal value, is self-defined, and relevant to their sense of self-identity.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how certain bacteria affect stomach inflammation in mice, which can be similar to humans.
  • They found that the bacteria caused only a little inflammation but made the stomach produce more helpful substances against infections.
  • When the mice had a food allergy, their stomachs showed a strong immune response, but the bacteria didn’t make this response worse.

  • The study aimed to assess how multiple attempts at emergency airway intubation in the emergency department (ED) increase the risk of complications.
  • An analysis of data from a multicenter registry showed that out of 15,079 intubation cases, complications occurred in 14% of patients, with hypoxia being the most common major issue.
  • The results indicated that the odds of major complications significantly increased with each additional intubation attempt, emphasizing the need for effective airway management strategies.
