Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) may be associated with complications such as venous thromboembolism (VTE) and recurrent SVT. The purpose of this study was to explore risk factors among patients with a first isolated episode of SVT (index SVT) involving upper and lower extremities and to estimate the prevalence of VTE complications within 1 year of index SVT. Retrospective chart review of electronic records at Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin identified 381 subjects with a first isolated SVT diagnosis (male/female: 170/211; median age 59.

Malaria is one of the most deadly diseases, affecting million of people especially in developing countries. Because of the rapidly increasing threat worldwide of malaria epidemics multidrugs resistant to therapies, there is an urgent global need to discover new classes of antimalarial compounds. In an effort to overcome this problem, we have investigated the use of structure-based classification models for the 'rational' selection/identification or design/optimization of new lead antimalarials from virtual combinatorial data sets.

Methods: We performed a controlled intervention study without random allocation that compared two non-concomitant cohorts of stroke patients corresponding to the periods immediately before (control group) and after (intervention group) the implementation of a clinical pathway. The main outcome measures were: a) quality of care indicators; b) improvements in functional capacity (Barthel score) and neurological function (Canadian scale); c) nosocomial complications; d) satisfaction, and e) mean length of hospital stay.

Growth hormone (GH) has been shown to have a profound impact on fish physiology and metabolism. However, detailed studies in transgenic fish have not been conducted. We have characterized the food conversion efficiency, protein profile, and biochemical correlates of growth rate in transgenic tilapia expressing the tilapia GH cDNA under the control of human cytomegalovirus regulatory sequences.
