Surgical drains are utilized in spinal surgery to reduce the incidence of epidural hematomas (EDHs) and to facilitate optimal wound healing. Despite their widespread use, there is a paucity of data to support their utility. The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the effect of using drains versus no drains on postoperative outcomes in adult and pediatric patients undergoing posterior spinal fusions for deformity or degenerative conditions.

The ability of trees to acquire soil nutrients under future climate conditions will influence forest composition and function in a warmer world. Rarely are multiple belowground carbon allocation pathways measured simultaneously in large global change experiments, restricting our understanding of how trees may shift their allocation of resources to different nutrient acquisition mechanisms under future climates. Leveraging a 20-year soil warming experiment, we show that ectomycorrhizal (EM) trees reduce mycorrhizal colonization and root exudation while increasing fine root biomass, while arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees largely maintained their belowground carbon allocation patterns in warmer soils.

The present study uses electron microscopy to document ultrastructural characteristics of hippocampal GABAergic inhibitory synapses under resting and stimulated conditions in three experimental systems. Synaptic profiles were sampled from stratum pyramidale and radiatum of the CA1 region from (1) perfusion fixed mouse brains, (2) immersion fixed rat organotypic slice cultures, and from (3) rat dissociated hippocampal cultures of mixed cell types. Synapses were stimulated in the brain by a 5 min delay in perfusion fixation to trigger an ischemia-like excitatory condition, and by treating the two culture systems with 90 mM high K for 2-3 min to depolarize the neurons.
