The University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) has developed an eczema portal that combines e-consulting, monitoring and self-management training by a dermatology nurse online for patients and parents of young children with atopic dermatitis (AD). Patient satisfaction with the portal was high. It could be extended to become a Digital Eczema Centre for multidisciplinary collaboration between health-care providers from different locations and the patient.

Hippocampal distribution of vesicular glutamate transporter 1 in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Purpose: Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) are responsible for loading synaptic vesicles with glutamate, determining the phenotype of glutamatergic neurons, and have been implicated in the regulation of quantal size and presynaptic plasticity. We analyzed VGLUT subtype expression in normal human hippocampus and tested the hypothesis that alterations in VGLUT expression may contribute to long-term changes in glutamatergic transmission reported in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Methods: VGLUT immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, Western blotting, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) were performed on biopsies from TLE patients without (non-HS) and with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and compared to autopsy controls and rat hippocampus.

Unimpaired sentence comprehension after anterior temporal cortex resection.

Unlabelled: Functional imaging studies have demonstrated involvement of the anterior temporal cortex in sentence comprehension. It is unclear, however, whether the anterior temporal cortex is essential for this function. We studied two aspects of sentence comprehension, namely syntactic and prosodic comprehension in temporal lobe epilepsy patients who were candidates for resection of the anterior temporal lobe.

Seizure freedom after functional hemispherectomy and a possible role for the insular cortex: the Dutch experience.

Object: The authors undertook this study to identify predictors of persistent postoperative seizures in their group of 28 Dutch pediatric and adolescent patients with medically intractable epilepsy who underwent functional hemispherectomy.

Methods: The records of 28 pediatric and adolescent patients who underwent a functional hemispherectomy in the University Medical Center Utrecht were retrospectively analyzed. The authors performed a Cox regression analysis, using the first postoperative seizure as the event.

Standard versus tailored left temporal lobe resections: differences in cognitive outcome?

Unlabelled: This study explores differences in cognitive outcome after a standard resection (SR) or tailored (TR) in 100 patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy, controlling for extent in the three lateral gyri. Comparing preoperative to 6-month postoperative performance on a battery of intelligence, language and verbal memory tests revealed the following: a differential effect of the procedure was found for digit span, a short-term memory and attention task, the SR group showing a gain and the TR group a loss postoperatively. This could be explained by a rather large improvement of the SR group with below average resection sizes in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) (<2.
