Spatial variation in the landscape factors climate, geomorphology, and lithology cause significant differences in water quality issues even when land use pressures are similar. The Physiographic Environment Classification (PEC) classifies landscapes based on their susceptibility to the loss of water quality contaminants. The classification is informed by a conceptual model of the landscape factors that control the hydrochemical maturity of water discharged to streams.

Spatial variation in landscape attributes can account for much of the variability in water quality relative to land use on its own. Such variation results from the coupling between the dominant processes governing water quality, namely hydrological, redox, and weathering and gradients in key landscape attributes, such as topography, geology, and soil drainage. Despite the importance of 'process-attribute' gradients (PAG), few water quality models explicitly account for their influence.

Plant communities can be affected both by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and hemiparasitic plants. However, little is known about the interactive effects of these two biotic factors on the productivity and diversity of plant communities. To address this question, we set up a greenhouse study in which different AMF inocula and a hemiparasitic plant (Rhinanthus minor) were added to experimental grassland communities in a fully factorial design.
