Adjusting to death: the effects of mortality salience and self-esteem on psychological well-being, growth motivation, and maladaptive behavior.

This research builds on terror management theory to examine the relationships among self-esteem, death cognition, and psychological adjustment. Self-esteem was measured (Studies 1-2, 4-8) or manipulated (Study 3), and thoughts of death were manipulated (Studies 1-3, 5-8) or measured (Study 4). Subsequently, satisfaction with life (Study 1), subjective vitality (Study 2), meaning in life (Studies 3-5), positive and negative affect (Studies 1, 4, 5), exploration (Study 6), state anxiety (Study 7), and social avoidance (Study 8) were assessed.

Development and evaluation of a minicolumn assay for the detection of aflatoxin M1 in milk.

A practical field method for the chemiselective immobilization and detection of aflatoxin M1 in milk has been developed and is being marketed. In this new method, aflatoxin M1 is selectively adsorbed at the interface of a layer of neutral sand and a band of magnesium silicate (Florisil) packed in a glass minicolumn. Rheologically interesting polysaccharides from yeasts.

We have examined the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary structures of polysaccharides exhibiting the rheological property of friction (drag) reduction in turbulent flows. We found an example of an exopolysaccharide from the yeast Cryptococcus laurentii that possessed high molecular weight but exhibited lower than expected drag reducing activity. Earlier correlations by Hoyt showing that beta 1 --> 3, beta 2 --> 4, and alpha 1 --> 3 linkages in polysaccharides favored drag reduction were expanded to include correlations to secondary structure.

Pregnancy-associated group B streptococcal endocarditis: a report of two fatal cases.

Group B streptococci commonly colonize parturient women, yet pregnancy-associated endocarditis due to this organism is rare. Most reports of group B streptococcal endocarditis are from the preantibiotic era and occurred in women with rheumatic mitral valve disease. Reported herein are two cases of fatal group B streptococcal endocarditis involving the aortic valve of women with no preexisting heart disease.
