In fit patients with newly diagnosed myeloma, high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is considered standard of care. For mobilization of CD34+ cells for ASCT, combined cytotoxic chemotherapy and G-CSF is commonly used. However, the importance of cytostatic chemotherapy for reliable mobilization remains unclear.

Insects are frequently infected with heritable bacterial endosymbionts. Some of them confer resistance to parasitoids. Such defensive symbionts are sensitive to variation in temperature.

Tolerance to environmental pollution in the freshwater crustacean Asellus aquaticus: A role for the microbiome.

Freshwater habitats are frequently contaminated by diverse chemicals of anthropogenic origin, collectively referred to as micropollutants, that can have detrimental effects on aquatic life. The animals' tolerance to micropollutants may be mediated by their microbiome. If polluted aquatic environments select for contaminant-degrading microbes, the acquisition of such microbes by the host may increase its tolerance to pollution.

Ecological divergence despite common mating sites: Genotypes and symbiotypes shed light on cryptic diversity in the black bean aphid species complex.

Different host plants represent ecologically dissimilar environments for phytophagous insects. The resulting divergent selection can promote the evolution of specialized host races, provided that gene flow is reduced between populations feeding on different plants. In black bean aphids belonging to the Aphis fabae complex, several morphologically cryptic taxa have been described based on their distinct host plant preferences.

Building pondscapes for amphibian metapopulations.

The success of ponds constructed to restore ecological infrastructure for pond-breeding amphibians and benefit aquatic biodiversity depends on where and how they are built. We studied effects of pond and landscape characteristics, including connectivity, on metapopulation dynamics of 12 amphibian species in Switzerland. To understand the determinants of long-term occupancy (here summarized as incidence), environmental effects on both colonization and persistence should be considered.
