The virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is partly controlled by the las quorum-sensing system. A rat model of acute pneumonia was used to investigate the pathophysiological impact of this system by comparing the virulence of the wild-type virulent laboratory strain PAO1 with that of its lasR-deleted mutant PAOR. In comparison with PAO1, PAOR was avirulent after an instillation of 106 cfu (mortality rates, 72 versus 0%, respectively; p < 0.

Helicobacter pylori may increase or inhibit gastric acid. We studied acid variations and plasma gastrin in cats harboring Helicobacter felis, harboring H. pylori, or free of gastric pathogens with reference to thioperamide (H(3) receptor antagonist) and SR-27417A (PAF receptor antagonist).

Background & Aims: The incidence of anal cancer is higher in patients with anal canal condyloma, a sexually transmitted disease, than in the general population. We determined the prevalence of anal dysplasia and cancer in patients with anal canal condyloma with respect to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, immunity status, and human papillomavirus types.

Methods: In 174 consecutive patients (114 HIV positive, 60 HIV negative) with anal canal condyloma, lesions were cured, and the patients were then followed up prospectively.

The ability of trovafloxacin and ciprofloxacin to select efflux mutants in vivo was studied in a model of acute Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia in rats. Twelve hours after intratracheal inoculation of 10(6) CFU of P. aeruginosa strain PAO1 enmeshed in agar beads, two groups of 12 rats were treated by three intraperitoneal injections of each antibiotic given every 5 h.
