Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how fresh and stored platelet concentrates (PCs) behave during inflammation, specifically in a controlled human model of endotoxemia induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • Researchers found that LPS increased markers related to coagulation and clotting, leading to a generally lower clotting ability in subjects compared to controls, while platelet transfusions improved clotting time and strength in those with endotoxemia.
  • Despite these improvements in coagulation, there were no significant differences noted between the effects of fresh versus stored platelets on coagulation parameters like thrombin-antithrombin complex (TATc) or extracellular vesicles (EVs).

Based on recent taxonomic and molecular tools, the Walter's duiker ( Colyn, 2010), endemic to the Dahomey Gap in West Africa, has been recognized as a new species in 2010. This species is largely hunted and may already be threatened by extinction. This review paper aims to synthesize the current knowledge on this species, covering its taxonomy, morphology, biology, ecology, diet, seed dispersal role, reproduction patterns, activity rate, parasitology, spatial distribution, habitats, population densities, and ongoing human pressures.

Engaging local communities is pivotal for wildlife conservation beyond protected areas, aligning with the 30 × 30 target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We assessed the effectiveness of 33 offtake indicators, derived from hunter declarations, in monitoring the status and extent of degradation of hunted wildlife sourced from camera trap surveys and faunal composition analysis. The rodents:ungulates ratio in offtake and the mean body mass of total offtake emerged as practical and robust indicators of faunal degradation within hunting systems, with significant potential for broader application in similar tropical forest environments.

Background: Patients receiving left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support require long-term anticoagulation to reduce the risk of thromboembolic complications. Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that has become first-line therapy; however, its safety in LVAD recipients has not been well described.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate whether, in patients with a fully magnetically levitated LVAD, treatment with apixaban would be feasible and comparable with respect to safety and freedom from the primary composite outcome of death or major hemocompatibility-related adverse events (HRAEs) (stroke, device thrombosis, major bleeding, aortic root thrombus, and arterial non-central nervous system thromboembolism) as compared with treatment with warfarin.
