Training to Improve Spatial Hearing and Situation Awareness when Wearing Hearing Protection.

Introduction: Hearing protection devices (HPDs) are standard personal protective equipment in military settings, but many service members may choose to not use HPDs because they impair spatial hearing and situation awareness. In an effort to reduce barriers to compliance by improving situation awareness while wearing HPDs, this study investigated whether brief training could counteract spatial hearing deficits when wearing HPDs. Participant's ability to correctly apply the HPDs across days was also examined.

Observed face mask use outside retail chain stores during the COVID-19 pandemic in two cities in the state of Idaho, USA.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, public health authorities have encouraged the use of face masks to minimize transmission within the community. To assess mask wear during a COVID-19 surge and guide public health response efforts, including public messaging on mask recommendations, we compared observed mask use in the largest city in each of Idaho's 2 most populous counties, both without a current mask mandate. We recorded mask usage by every third person exiting stores of 5 retail chains in Boise and Nampa during November 8-December 5, 2021.

Case report: Improving quality of care in Kazakhstan institutions.

This project is a community case study implemented by local professionals and caregivers to improve the quality of caregiving in two Kazakhstan institutions for infants and toddlers. Local professionals first received comprehensive training by an international team experienced in relevant research-based practices, and then the locals trained institutional staff. Over nearly 2 years, one institution progressively implemented changes in three wards and the other institution in one ward.

Encephalopathy in a Recent Lung Transplant Recipient.

A 27-year-old man with a history of bronchiolitis obliterans caused by a severe viral illness during early childhood that necessitated lung transplantation who was receiving tacrolimus therapy presented with rapidly worsening mental status. Prior to his change in mental status, his postoperative course was complicated by severe primary graft dysfunction and acute renal failure due to acute tubular necrosis that required continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The patient had a prolonged intubation that required periodic BAL for mucous plugging.

A Reproducible and Effective Technique for Coronary Sinus Injury Repair.

Coronary sinus injury related to the use of a retrograde cardioplegia catheter is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication with mortality reported as high as 20%. We present a series of iatrogenic coronary sinus injuries as well as an effective method of repair without any ensuing mortality. There were 3,004 cases that utilized retrograde cardioplegia at our institution from 2007 to 2018.
