Acute Otitis Media in Children-Challenges of Antibiotic Resistance in the Post-Vaccination Era.

Acute otitis media (AOM) is a leading cause of antibiotic prescriptions in children worldwide, even in the era of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. We aimed to assess the bacterial spectrum of AOM in children and to investigate the antimicrobial resistance profile in culture-positive cases. We performed a retrospective, tympanocentesis-based analysis of antimicrobial resistance patterns in children with AOM hospitalized in "St Mary" Emergency Hospital for Children Iasi, Romania, between January 2013 and December 2021.

Genetic Features of Mediated Colistin Resistance in CMY-2-Producing From Romanian Poultry.

Colistin is a last resort antibiotic used for the treatment of human infections associated with carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriales. Here, we evaluated the occurrence of and plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in colistin and/or carbapenem resistant human clinical Enterobacteriales and other gram-negative bacteria ( = 543) as well as third generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GCR) isolates from poultry abattoir workers ( = 15) and poultry fecal samples ( = 92) collected from two geographically separate abattoirs in Romania. which revealed that was present within four sequence types (STs): ST744 ( = 7), ST57 ( = 7), ST156 ( = 2), and ST10 ( = 1).

"Message from a turtle": otitis with Salmonella arizonae in children: Case report.

Rationale: Salmonella enterica subsp arizonae is a common gut inhabitant of reptiles (snakes are the most common reservoir, but it also occurs in turtles). Alhough human cases owing to this organism are exceedingly rare, it may occasionally infect young infants and immunocompromised individuals with a history of intimate associations with reptiles. Our case is the 20th one among the infections with S arizonae in children, but the 2nd one of otitis and the first of mastoiditis.

Active surveillance scheme in three Romanian hospitals reveals a high prevalence and variety of carbapenamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria: a pilot study, December 2014 to May 2015.

We report the findings of an active surveillance scheme for detection of asymptomatic carriers with carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria (CP-GNB) in Romanian hospitals. During a pilot study from December 2014 to May 2015, faecal cultures were screened in three hospitals (two large, one medium-size) for patients newly admitted to selected wards or inpatients transferred from other wards to an intensive-care unit. The study revealed a high prevalence of CP-GNB detected in 22/27 and 28/38 of the carbapenem non-susceptible isolates from Hospitals 1 and 3, respectively.

Emergence of concurrent infections with colistin-resistant ESBL-positive Klebsiella pneumoniae and OXA-23-producing Acinetobacter baumannii sensitive to colistin only in a Romanian cardiac intensive care unit.

We report the emergence and analysis of a cluster of concurrent infections/colonisations with colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and OXA-23 carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter baumannii in patients who had undergone cardiac surgery. We describe the emergence of colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae harbouring blaCTX-M-15, blaSHV-11, blaOXA-1, blaTEM-1 beta-lactamases and aac(6')-Ib-cr fluoroquinolone resistance.
