Total mRNA from venom glands of young queen bees was transcribed into cDNA and cloned into the PstI site of plasmid pBR322. The nucleotide sequence of two clones with inserts containing genetic information for prepromelittin is presented. The longer insert encompasses 374 base pairs including 52 nucleotides before the initiation codon and a 3' non-coding region of 112 base pairs.

Histones from 19-day-old chick embryo lens epithelium, lens fibers, liver, brain, and erythrocytes were electrophoresed in polyacrylamide gels using buffers containing sodium dodecylsulfate, acetic acid urea, or mixtures of Triton X-100 acetic acid urea. In the last two buffer systems, histone bands were characterized by their apparent molecular weights determined by electrophoresis in the second dimension in sodium dodecylsulfate containing polyacrylamide gels. From the densitograms of the stained gels, the relative proportion of protein in different histone bands was estimated.

Smears taken from eight probands with carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma of the cervix uteri have been stained with DDD and Fast Blue B. The extinctions microspectrometrically measured at 560 nm are directly proportional to the quantity of protein-SH-groups. The extinctions of the total cell (Eges) and of the cell nucleus (EK) are measured in 67 basal cells (BAS), 78 dysplatic cells (DYS), 122 undifferentiated cancer cells (UNIF) and 89 differentiated cancer cells (POLY).
