The effect of iron deficiency on cardiac resynchronization therapy: results from the RIDE-CRT Study.

Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improves functional status, induces reverse left ventricular remodelling, and reduces hospitalization and mortality in patients with symptomatic heart failure, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and QRS prolongation. However, the impact of iron deficiency on CRT response remains largely unclear. The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of functional and absolute iron deficiency on reverse cardiac remodelling, clinical response, and outcome after CRT implantation.

Design and rationale for the "Me & My Heart" (eMocial) study: A randomized evaluation of a new smartphone-based support tool to increase therapy adherence of patients with acute coronary syndrome.

A novel smartphone-based patient support tool was developed to increase the adherence to antiplatelet therapy and lifestyle changes in patients after coronary angioplasty for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The eMocial study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02615704) investigates whether an electronic support tool will improve adherence to comedication and lifestyle changes in ACS patients.

Acute heart failure : An unmet medical need.

Despite recent advances in the management of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), the burden of acute heart failure (AHF) remains significant with a high morbidity and mortality that has not been improved by any treatment modality. A meta-analysis summarized the study results on the effects of tolvaptan on AHF, which failed to demonstrate an improvement in short-term and long-term mortality, length of hospital stay and reduced frequency of worsening heart failure (WHF). Similar trial results were also reported in other AHF studies, such as the ASCEND-HF and the RELAX-AHF-2 trials.

Myocarditis and inflammatory cardiomyopathy: from diagnosis to treatment.

Based on the definition in the European Society of Cardiology statement, myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium diagnosed by established histological, immunological, and immunohistochemical criteria, whereas inflammatory cardiomyopathy is myocarditis in association with cardiac dysfunction. Actual incidences of myocarditis and CMi are difficult to determine. Studies addressing the issue of sudden cardiac death in young people report a highly variable autopsy prevalence of myocarditis, ranging from 2-42% of cases.
