Background: Notwithstanding the documented short- and long-term weight loss and remission of physical and mental diseases following bariatric surgery, a significant proportion of patients fail to respond (fully) to treatment in terms of physical and mental health improvement. Mounting evidence links food-specific impulsivity, prefrontal cortex (PFC) hypoactivity and disrupted hormone secretion in bariatric surgery candidates to poorer post-surgical health outcomes. Neuromodulatory treatments like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) uniquely target these neurobehavioral impairments.

Modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods like carbon relaxation dispersion in the rotating frame (C-R) and proton chemical exchange saturation transfer (H-CEST) are key methods to investigate molecular recognition in biomacromolecules and to detect molecular motions on the μs to s timescale, revealing transient conformational states. Changes in kinetics can be linked to binding, folding, or catalytic events. Here, we investigated whether these methods allow detection of changes in the dynamics of a small, highly selective peptide catalyst during recognition of its enantiomeric substrates.

Assessing Biomarkers of Porcine Kidneys under Normothermic Machine Perfusion-Can We Gain Insight into a Marginal Organ?

To identify potentially transplantable organs in a pool of marginal kidneys, 33 porcine slaughterhouse kidneys were perfused for 4 h with whole blood. During the normothermic perfusion, plasma, urine, and tissue samples were taken. Several biomarkers for tubule injury, endothelial activation, and inflammatory response were evaluated for a potential correlation with macroscopic appearance, histology, and filtration activity.

Tumor cell heterogeneity defines therapy responsiveness in neuroblastoma (NB), a cancer derived from neural crest cells. NB consists of two primary subtypes: adrenergic and mesenchymal.
