Clinical management of active bleeding: what the emergency radiologist needs to know.

Active bleeding is a clinical emergency that often requires swift action driven by efficient communication. Extravasation of intravenous (IV) contrast on computed tomography (CT) is a hallmark of active hemorrhage. This can be seen on exams performed for a variety of indications and can occur anywhere in the body.

The adrenal mass: correlation of histopathology with imaging.

Background: Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can help diagnose benign adrenal adenomas, but prior studies rely on nonoperative follow-up as proof of a lesion's benign nature. We examined adrenalectomy tissues to determine if imaging characteristics correlate with histopathologic findings.

Methods: We retrieved data for 196 consecutive adrenalectomies in 192 patients from 2000 to 2008.

Identifying important structural characteristics of arsenic resistance proteins by using designed three-stranded coiled coils.

Arsenic, a contaminant of water supplies worldwide, is one of the most toxic inorganic ions. Despite arsenic's health impact, there is relatively little structural detail known about its interactions with proteins. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli have evolved arsenic resistance using the Ars operon that is regulated by ArsR, a repressor protein that dissociates from DNA when As(III) binds.

Minimally invasive resection of benign esophageal tumors.

Objective: Benign tumors of the esophagus are uncommon. Traditionally, resection has required thoracotomy or laparotomy. In this study we present our experience with resection of these tumors using a minimally invasive approach.

Impact of hypoxia on early chick embryo growth and cardiovascular function.

Oxygen tension is a critical factor for appropriate embryonic and fetal development. Chronic hypoxia exposure alters cardiovascular (CV) function and structure in the late fetus and newborn, yet the immature myocardium is considered to be less sensitive to hypoxia than the mature heart. We tested the hypothesis that hypoxia during the period of primary CV morphogenesis impairs immature embryonic CV function and embryo growth.
