We report on a case of a postneurosurgical meningitis due to ceftriaxone-susceptible Proteus penneri, with selection of a ceftriaxone-resistant isolate following treatment with ceftriaxone. The isolates presented identical patterns by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and produced a single beta-lactamase named HugA with an isoelectric point of 6.7.

Peptide mapping by capillary zone electrophoresis: how close is theoretical simulation to experimental determination.

A multi-variable computer model is presented for the prediction of the electrophoretic mobilities of peptides at pH 2.5 from known physico-chemical constants of their amino acid residues. The model is empirical and does not claim any theoretical dependencies; however, the results suggest that, at least at this pH, peptides may be theoretically represented as classical polymers of freely joined amino acid residues of unequal sizes.

Detection of mycobacterial nucleic acids by polymerase chain reaction in fixed tissue specimens of patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, which amplifies a fragment of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene present in all mycobacterial species, was developed and tested on 84 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from 51 patients with human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection. The PCR products were characterized either by sequencing or by hybridization with nonradioactive oligonucleotide probes specific for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, M. avium, or M.
