Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major cause of disability, with complications postinjury often leading to lifelong health issues with the need for extensive treatment. Neurological outcome post-SCI can be variable and difficult to predict, particularly in incompletely injured patients. The identification of specific SCI biomarkers in blood may be able to improve prognostics in the field.

Background: Oral language skills provide the foundation for formal education, and children may require language support over an extended period of time to maximise their education potential. Most work on language intervention, however, has focussed on the preschool or early school years. Here, we describe the development and evaluation of the Oral Language for Literacy Intervention (OLLI) programme which is designed to support children with weak language skills in the later primary school years.

Background: The permitted input power density of rotating anode x-ray sources is limited by the performance of available target materials. The commonly used simplified formulas for the focal spot surface temperature ignore the tube voltage despite its variation in clinical practice. Improved modeling of electron transport and target erosion, as proposed in this work, improves the prediction of x-ray output degradation by target erosion, the absolute x-ray dose output and the quality of diagnostic imaging and orthovolt cancer therapy for a wide range of technique factors.
