Learning from Safe-by-Design for Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design: Mapping the current landscape of Safe-by-Design reviews, case studies, and frameworks.

With the introduction of the European Commission's "Safe and Sustainable-by-Design" (SSbD) framework, the interest in understanding the implications of safety and sustainability assessments of chemicals, materials, and processes at early-innovation stages has skyrocketed. Our study focuses on the "Safe-by-Design" (SbD) approach from the nanomaterials sector, which predates the SSbD framework. In this assessment, SbD studies have been compiled and categorized into reviews, case studies, and frameworks.

Longitudinal, prospective study of head impacts in male high school football players.

Introduction: Repetitive, subconcussive events may adversely affect the brain and cognition during sensitive periods of development. Prevention of neurocognitive consequences of concussion in high school football is therefore an important public health priority. We aimed to identify the player positions and demographic, behavioral, cognitive, and impact characteristics that predict the frequency and acceleration of head impacts in high school football players.

Building a case for incorporating sport as an indicator in human development index.

Purpose: United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution 73/24 on 3rd December 2018, to recognize sport as an enabler of sustainable development. To examine whether sport really plays an enabling role, the medals ranking of countries on the basis of medals obtained (per million population) in Summer Olympics during the five Olympics games over the first two decades of 21st century has been chosen as an indicator of sports achievement of a country and has been compared with their Human Development Index (HDI) ranking during that particular year of Olympics. The aim of this research was to examine the correlation between sports achievement and HDI.

Analytical and toxicological aspects of nanomaterials in different product groups: Challenges and opportunities.

The widespread integration of engineered nanomaterials into consumer and industrial products creates new challenges and requires innovative approaches in terms of design, testing, reliability, and safety of nanotechnology. The aim of this review article is to give an overview of different product groups in which nanomaterials are present and outline their safety aspects for consumers. Here, release of nanomaterials and related analytical challenges and solutions as well as toxicological considerations, such as dose-metrics, are discussed.

The large footprint of small-scale artisanal gold mining in Ghana.

Gold mining has played a significant role in Ghana's economy for centuries. Regulation of this industry has varied over time and while industrial mining is prevalent in the country, the expansion of artisanal mining, or Galamsey has escalated in recent years. Many of these artisanal mines are not only harmful to human health due to the use of Mercury (Hg) in the amalgamation process, but also leave a significant footprint on terrestrial ecosystems, degrading and destroying forested ecosystems in the region.
