Time course of fibrillation and defibrillation thresholds after an intravenous bolus of amiodarone--an experimental study.

Unlabelled: Experimental studies have described an increase in ventricular fibrillation threshold (VFT) by intravenous amiodarone. The aim of this study was to examine the early time course of changes in VFT and defibrillation thresholds (DFT) after an intravenous bolus of amiodarone in an experimental pig model of transient myocardial ischemia.

Methods And Results: VFT and relative effective ventricular refractory period (ERP) were measured in 15 anaesthetized open-chest pigs after 3 min of regional coronary ischaemia before (time 0) and 2, 15, 30, 60, and 90 min after the intravenous injection of normal saline (group A, n = 5) or amiodarone, 5 mg/kg over 15 s (group B, n = 10).

Nutritional implications of chronic dyspepsia in childhood.

Chronic dyspepsia is common in children. However, the association of individual predominant symptoms with gastric emptying and their impact on nutritional status are poorly defined. We therefore studied 31 children (mean age 11 years, 14 boys) with chronic dyspepsia and classified their predominant symptoms (PS) by their character and severity.

Multiple esophageal rings: an association with eosinophilic esophagitis: case report and review of the literature.

Esophagitis may present endoscopically with erythema, edema, loss of vascular pattern, friability, and ulceration of the esophageal mucosa. Left untreated, chronic esophagitis may result in stricture formation. The presence of multiple concentric rings involving the entire esophagus has been cited as a chronic form of esophagitis.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is present in human breast milk and its receptor is present on intestinal epithelial cells.

VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is a multifunctional cytokine active on blood vessel cells. The present study measured VEGF in the aqueous phase of human milk and examined how the concentration varied with gestational age and the duration of lactation after birth. We hypothesized that VEGF-specific receptors were present on the apical surface of intestinal epithelial cells.
