[Amebic colitis and amebic liver abscess--epidemiology and personal case report].

The large intestine reacts relatively monomorphically to different stimuli. From this differential-diagnostic problems may result. The history of a patient is described which could be pursued clinically over 12 weeks and during the course of which the correction of the diagnosis ulcerative colitis into amoebic colitis was necessary.

Carl Thiersch is one of the great surgeons of the 19th century. His life, full of work and success was a fortune for surgery. At the occasion of Carl Thiersch's centenary of death a review of his life and an appreciation of his scientific work are presented.

Erwin Payr was a man with a profound knowledge and extraordinary surgical skill, a brilliant teacher and a very loyal personality. By these attributes he became one of the most famous surgeons of this century. During his whole life he admired his academic teacher Nicoladoni who promoted him in any way.

Life and scientific work of Friedrich Trendelenburg are gratefully appreciated on the occasion of his 150th birthday. The education by his parents, the great impressions gained during a visit in Scotland as a young man and the molding influence of his academic teacher v. Langenbeck are presented.

[Electromyographic and manometric studies of the antrum and duodenal motility in rabbits under the influence of pentagastrin in a mechanical duodenal passage disorder].

The influence of a mechanical disturbance of the duodenum on the motility of the antrum and duodenum was investigated by means of the electromyography and the perfusion manometry. Thereby the effect of the pentagastrin stimulating the motility of the unstriated muscles of the gastro-intestinal tract was used for testing the function reserve of the antrum- and duodenal-muscles. After one and a half month of establishing the passage obstacle there occurs a complex disturbance of the electrical activity; the unstriated muscles does not react on a stimulating excitation.
