Article Synopsis
  • The REGAIN trial found that spinal and general anesthesia provide similar outcomes regarding ambulation and survival after hip fracture surgery.
  • In a secondary analysis, researchers compared pain levels, analgesic use, and patient satisfaction between the two anesthesia types.
  • Results indicated that spinal anesthesia led to more severe pain in the first 24 hours post-surgery and higher prescription analgesic use at 60 days, while patient satisfaction remained comparable across both groups.

Histamine H receptor blockade may enhance lesion remyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS). The efficacy (using a magnetic resonance imaging marker of myelination, magnetisation transfer ratio [MTR]), safety and pharmacokinetics of GSK239512, a potent and brain penetrant H receptor antagonist/inverse agonist on lesion remyelination in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) were assessed. This was a phase II, randomised, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, double-blind (sponsor-unblinded), international, multicentre study (NCT01772199).

The authors reviewed all patients treated for periprosthetic femur fractures between March 1, 2007, and January 31, 2010 at the senior author's institution. Demographic features, mechanism of injury, radiographs, and computed tomography scans were reviewed to determine the type and stability of the femoral implant at the time of injury. All Vancouver B1 fractures were treated with a novel technique that used a contoured distal femoral locking plate intended for the contralateral femur and reversed to accommodate the ipsilateral femoral bow and contour of the proximal femur.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of high-dose (3,600 mg/day) vs low-dose (1,200 mg/day) oral gabapentin enacarbil (GEn) on pain intensity in adults with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and a history of inadequate response to ≥1,800 mg/day gabapentin.

Design: Multicenter, randomized, double-blind, crossover study (NCT00617461).

Setting: Thirty-five outpatient centers in Germany and the United States.

Unlabelled: Gabapentin enacarbil (GEn) is an actively transported prodrug of gabapentin that provides sustained, dose-proportional exposure to gabapentin. This randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study evaluated the safety and efficacy of 3 different maintenance doses of oral GEn in subjects with postherpetic neuralgia. Adults with a 24-hour average pain intensity score of ≥4.
