Article Synopsis
  • Drug information (DI) from hospital pharmacies is essential for safe drug therapy, but its quality needs to be better understood and assessed.
  • A study analyzed responses to fictitious inquiries over five years from German hospital pharmacies to evaluate how factors like inquiry complexity, organizational structure, and quality measures affected DI quality.
  • Results revealed that specialized DI centers performed better overall, particularly with complex inquiries, and recommended implementing "second look" reviews and enhanced training for pharmacists to improve quality further.

Objectives: Guidelines for drug information (DI) provided by hospital pharmacists call for quality assurance procedures; however, no method of evaluation is internationally agreed on. The procedure should be feasible, reproducible and representative for real-life quality. We tested a new approach using a fictitious enquiry under simulated real-life conditions for quality assessment of DI by German hospital pharmacists.

Introduction: Disease-free survival (DFS) is increasingly being used as surrogate end-point for overall survival (OS) in cancer trials. So far, there has been no validation of the surrogacy of DFS for OS for neoadjuvant treatment of gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma.

Methods: The study uses individual patient data (IPD) from eight randomised controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 1126 patients) comparing neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery with surgery alone for gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma.

Background: Perioperative chemotherapy significantly improves survival in patients with locally advanced oesophagogastric cancer (EGC). However, as approximately 60% of patients will die from their disease, new therapeutic agents such as molecular-targeted drugs are needed.

Patients And Methods: To evaluate the role of panitumumab with perioperative chemotherapy, previously untreated patients with locally advanced EGC received, in an open-label randomised phase II study (NEOPECX), standard epirubicin, cisplatin, capecitabine (ECX) chemotherapy with or without panitumumab.
