Livestock provide meat, milk, draught labour, are used for breeding, and act as a store of value for smallholder farmers. High young stock mortality (YSM) has the potential to cause significant financial loss. The Young Stock Mortality Reduction Consortium collaborated on a project to deliver a package of basic health and husbandry interventions to reduce YSM for cattle and small ruminants in mixed and pastoral production systems in Ethiopia.

Introduction: In sub-Saharan Africa, pre-weaning young stock mortality (YSM) is in the order of 20 to 30% across most livestock species and production systems. High YSM has significant economic implications for livestock keepers, but few studies provide estimates of the "cost of YSM." This study explores a bio-economic herd modeling approach to estimate the "cost of YSM" at farming/livestock system level.

Article Synopsis
  • Good cattle reproductive performance is crucial for livestock productivity and livelihoods, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
  • A study collected recent evidence on cattle reproduction in sub-Saharan Africa between 2012-2022, identifying a significant number of cow studies (133) but very few bull studies (11), mainly focusing on Ethiopia.
  • Key reproductive parameters, like calving intervals, were well-documented, suggesting that while there's a gap in bull performance research, good reproductive outcomes in cows are achievable in LMICs.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated the effectiveness of using commonly prescribed medications to lower the risk of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) in patients who have intracranial aneurysms, which often remain untreated due to the risks of invasive procedures.
  • The study analyzed data from 4,879 aSAH cases and 43,911 control subjects, evaluating the impact of 205 drugs based on their usage within three different timeframes: current (within 3 months), recent (3–12 months), and past (>12 months).
  • Findings revealed that drugs like lisinopril and simvastatin reduced aSAH risk when used currently, while medications like warfarin increased the risk, highlighting the potential
