Background: Global emergency medicine (GEM) is situated at the intersection of global health and emergency medicine (EM), which is built upon a history of colonial systems and institutions that continue to reinforce inequities between high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) today. These power imbalances yield disparities in GEM practice, research, and education.
Approach: The Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine formed the Decolonizing GEM Working Group in 2020, which now includes over 100 worldwide members.
Silicate perovskite, with the mineral name bridgmanite, is the most abundant mineral in the Earth's lower mantle. We investigated crystal structures and equations of state of two perovskite-type Fe-rich phases, FeMgSiO and FeMgAlSiO, at high pressures, employing single-crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. We solved their crystal structures at high pressures and found that the FeMgSiO phase adopts a novel monoclinic double-perovskite structure with the space group of at pressures above 12 GPa, whereas the FeMgAlSiO phase adopts an orthorhombic perovskite structure with the space group of at pressures above 8 GPa.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Studies using fast-acting subcutaneous (SQ) insulin analogs in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) have demonstrated efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, allowing treatment of mild-to-moderate (MTM)-severity DKA patients in non-intensive care unit (ICU) settings. However, emergency department (ED)-based studies are few, with limited exploration of impacts on operational metrics.
Methods: We implemented the SQuID (Subcutaneous Insulin in Diabetic Ketoacidosis) protocol for adults with MTM-severity DKA in an urban academic ED, collecting data from August 1, 2021, to February 28, 2022.
