Acute Transverse Myelitis and Nicolau Syndrome after Benzathine Penicillin Injection.

Rare complications have been documented due to inadvertent intravascular administration of penicillin such as Nicolau syndrome (lipoatrophy), transverse myelitis, injury to sciatic nerve as well as Hoigne syndrome (transient central nervous system dysfunction).1 We present a case report where a young male developed Nicolau syndrome and transverse myelitis after receiving benzathine penicillin injection.

Awareness about Ethics Committee amongst the Medical Teachers in a Medical College.

Introduction: The Ethics Committees (EC) are established to safeguard the safety and rights of the subjects participating in a research study. No formal training about Ethics Committee is given to the medical students in undergraduate and post graduate education as a part of curriculum.

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome secondary to tuberculosis induced cachexia.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare cause of obstruction of 3rd part of duodenum between abdominal aorta and the overlying superior mesenteric artery caused by decrease in the angle between the two vessels as a result of rapid loss of retroperitoneal fat. It is seen in conditions causing severe weight loss and catabolic states. We report a case of pulmonary tuberculosis leading to superior mesenteric artery syndrome.

Hypomagnesemia in critically ill medical patients.

Background: Hypomagnesemia is an important but underdiagnosed electrolyte abnormality in critically ill patients. There are many studies to find the prevalence of hypomagnesemia and its effects on mortality and morbidity in these patients. Most of these studies have been carried out in intensive care units caring for patients with medical and surgical conditions and postoperative patients or those in respiratory intensive care unit, or critically ill cancer patients.
