Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) has a poorer prognosis than idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with median survival of only 1 year post-diagnosis.
  • Treatments for PAH have shown limited effectiveness for PVOD, with risks such as pulmonary oedema and mixed results from case reports on medication effects.
  • Lung transplantation is the best long-term treatment for suitable patients, but candidates over a certain age or with certain cancers are typically excluded; a case study describes a successful 5-year sildenafil treatment for a 59-year-old patient with PVOD and multiple myeloma.

Article Synopsis
  • Tegaserod is a selective agonist of serotonin receptors and is primarily used to treat bowel diseases, which led researchers to investigate its effects on human cardiac atrial 5-HT receptors.
  • In mice with cardiac-specific overexpression of these receptors, tegaserod demonstrated positive effects on heart muscle contraction and rate, while showing no such effects in normal mice.
  • The study revealed that tegaserod enhances contraction strength in human atrial tissue, particularly when combined with cilostamide, though it acts as a partial agonist compared to serotonin and isoprenaline.

Objectives: Extracorporeal circulation induces pronounced effects on haemostasis and rheology. To study these, an ex vivo simulation model is an attractive alternative but often requires large amounts of blood. We sought to create a miniaturized roller pump circuit requiring minimal amounts of blood and to test if the circuit could be used to compare coagulation, platelet function and blood rheology between a dextran-based and a crystalloid-based priming solution.

The hop cyst nematode, , is the most common plant-parasitic nematode associated with hop worldwide. This study reports the draft genome of generated on the PacBio Sequel IIe System with the ultra-low DNA input HiFi sequencing method, and the corresponding genome annotation. This genome resource will help further studies on and other cyst nematodes.

Dopamine receptors have been claimed not to directly increase contractility in the human heart. Therefore, we performed contraction experiments in isolated electrically driven human atrial preparations (HAP). For comparison, we performed contraction experiments with left atrial preparations of transgenic mice which harbor a cardiac overexpression of human D-dopamine receptors (D-TG).
