Article Synopsis
  • - The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can be injured during neck surgery, leading to serious issues with vocal cord function, but using electromyography (EMG) helps identify the nerve and decrease the risk of damage.
  • - Improper placement of specialized EMG endotracheal tubes (ETTs) can lead to unreliable signals, so a new educational protocol was created to standardize their placement and improve RLN monitoring reliability.
  • - Data from surgeries before and after the protocol showed a significant drop in alerts for ETT malposition, highlighting improved accuracy and a sustained reduction in nerve injury risks through ongoing education for anesthesia staff.

Proteins of the trefoil factor family (TFF) participate in mucosal repair and are formed by single or tandemly repeated trefoil domains. TFFs have been extensively studied in mammals and amphibians, but they have not been functionally characterized in other animals. Here we report the identification of two genes expressed in the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, predicted to encode trefoil domain-containing peptides, one with four trefoil domains in tandem and the other one with a trefoil domain flanked by two ShKT domains.

Article Synopsis
  • Integrating genetic data into conservation management in Latin America requires collaboration between researchers and managers to address biodiversity challenges.
  • A survey of 468 conservation managers across 21 Latin American countries showed that 65% had engaged in genetic assessments, finding them valuable for management decisions.
  • The study identified barriers for the 35% of respondents who hadn't used genetic assessments, including limited funding, lack of lab facilities, and insufficient trained personnel.

The Sr/Ca and Sr/Sr ratios are used as natural indicators (geomarkers) in fish to reveal migratory patterns, due to significant relationships between these ratios measured in the water and in the fish calcified structures (otoliths, bones). The aim of this study was to assess the potential use of the Limnoperna fortunei shell as a proxy for monitoring the spatial and temporal variability of Sr/Ca and Sr/Sr in water. These ratios were compared in water samples and bivalve shells proceeding from eight sites of four hydrogeological regions of the La Plata Basin (Argentina and Uruguay), collected in two hydrological periods (winter and summer) in order to depict the pattern of geographical and temporal variability and to evaluate the relationship between both matrices.
