Empirical studies from laboratory systems and humans show that the gut microbiota is linked to host health. Similar evidence for effects on traits linked to fitness in nature is rare, not least because experimentally manipulating the gut microbiota is challenging. We isolated, characterized, and cultured a bacterial strain, APC4233, directly from a wild bird (the great tit ) and provided it as a self-administered dietary supplement.

Study Design: Cross-sectional serosurvey (part of a national JEV serosurveillance program).
Setting: Three northern Victorian local public health units (Ovens Murray, Goulburn Valley, Loddon Mallee), 8 August - 1 December 2022.
The evolution of pesticide resistance is a widespread problem with potentially severe consequences for global food security. We introduce the resevol R package, which simulates individual-based models of pests with evolving genomes that produce complex, polygenic, and covarying traits affecting pest life history and pesticide resistance. Simulations are modelled on a spatially-explicit and highly customisable landscape in which crop and pesticide application and rotation can vary, making the package a highly flexible tool for both general and tactical models of pest management and resistance evolution.

The only essential histone acetyltransferase (HAT) in yeast, Esa1, is part of the 1-MDa NuA4 complex, which plays pivotal roles in both transcription and DNA-damage repair. NuA4 has the unique capacity to acetylate histone targets located several nucleosomes away from its recruitment site.

In this work, we collected infrared (IR) absorption and Raman scattering spectra of model compounds, artificial amino acids, and model proteins that contain terminal alkyne groups, and we used our results to draw conclusions about the signal strength and sensitivity to the local environment of both aliphatic and aromatic terminal alkyne C≡C stretching bands. While the IR bands of alkynyl model compounds displayed surprisingly broad solvatochromism, their absorptions were weak enough that alkynes can be ruled out as effective IR probes.
