Atrial fibrillation and autonomic nervous system: A translational approach to guide therapeutic goals.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is known to play an important role in the genesis and maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF). Biomolecular and genetic mechanisms, anatomical knowledges with recent diagnostic techniques acquisitions, both invasive and non-invasive, have enabled greater therapeutic goals in patients affected by AF related to ANS imbalance. Catheter ablation of ganglionated plexi (GP) in the left and right atrium has been proposed in varied clinical conditions.

Choanal atresia associated with prenatal methimazole exposure: three new patients.

We report three patients with bilateral choanal atresia in children prenatally exposed to methimazole (MMI) in order to define a MMI embryopathy clinical pattern. The combination of choanal atresia and other specific malformations strongly resembles previously reported patients exposed to MMI in utero. At present, propylthiouracil is considered the best treatment in pregnancies.

Formation of supernumerary euchromatic short arm isochromosomes: parent and cell stage of origin in new cases and review of the literature.

In order to get insight in the formation of isochromosomes we analysed different supernumerary euchromatic short arm isochromosomes for the parent and cell stage of origin. After cytogenetic detection and confirmation by fluorescence-in-situ hybridization we performed short tandem repeat typing in a child with i(9p), three with i(12p) and three with i(18p). The extra chromosomes were monocentric in each case, the i(9p) and i(12p) constitutions were found in mosaic with normal cell lines.
