What controls the formation of patchy substrates of white sand vegetation in the Amazonian lowlands is still unclear. This research integrated the geological history and plant inventories of a white sand vegetation patch confined to one large fan-shaped sandy substrate of northern Amazonia, which is related to a megafan environment. We examined floristic patterns to determine whether abundant species are more often generalists than the rarer one, by comparing the megafan environments and older basement rocks.

Background: Our research group has recently developed liposomes with ionic gradient and in a combined manner as donor and acceptor vesicles containing ropivacaine (RVC; at 2% or 0.75%). Looking for applications of such novel formulations for postoperative pain control, we evaluated the duration of anesthesia, pharmacokinetics, and tissue reaction evoked by these new RVC formulations.

We analysed the flora of 46 forest inventory plots (25 m x 100 m) in old growth forests from the Amazonian region to identify the role of environmental (topographic) and spatial variables (obtained using PCNM, Principal Coordinates of Neighbourhood Matrix analysis) for common and rare species. For the analyses, we used multiple partial regression to partition the specific effects of the topographic and spatial variables on the univariate data (standardised richness, total abundance and total biomass) and partial RDA (Redundancy Analysis) to partition these effects on composition (multivariate data) based on incidence, abundance and biomass. The different attributes (richness, abundance, biomass and composition based on incidence, abundance and biomass) used to study this metacommunity responded differently to environmental and spatial processes.

Treg cells are crucial to prevent immune dysregulation, but little is known about the frequency of these cells in neonates, particularly in very/moderate and late preterm newborns studied as separate groups. The CD4(+) CD25(hi) CD127(lo) FOXP3(+) Treg population was phenotypically characterized to assess maturation markers and gut-homing integrins by flow cytometry in the cord blood of healthy preterm newborns born at 30-33(6/7) gestation weeks (Group 1), at 34-36(6/7) gestation weeks (Group 2) and term newborns born at 37-41 gestation weeks (Group 3), compared to healthy adults. An inverse correlation of the Treg percentage and gestational age was found, with significantly higher frequencies in Group 1 compared to Groups 2 and 3 and in Group 2 compared to Group 3, and significantly higher Treg frequencies and numbers in the neonates compared to the adults.

Many new photovoltaic (PV) applications, such as the concentrating PV (CPV) systems, are appearing on the market. The main characteristic of CPV systems is to concentrate sunlight on a receiver by means of optical devices and to decrease the solar cells area required. A low CPV (LCPV) system allows optimizing the PV effect with high increase of generated electric power as well as decrease of active surface area.
