Objectives: Primary stability (PS) is a key factor for promoting osseointegration and long-term success of dental implants particularly for immediate loading protocols. Beyond the current assessments of PS, an accurate pre-operative evaluation of PS would contribute to the improvement of surgical planning and treatment outcome. This study used biomechanical testing and homogenized finite element (hFE) analysis to objectively measure PS in the laboratory, and digitally estimate PS from prior μCT reconstructions.

Article Synopsis
  • Glycogen storage disorder type IIIa is a rare genetic condition affecting the liver and muscles, where liver transplantation can help with metabolic control but does not address muscle issues.
  • A case study describes a 31-year-old man who had a liver transplant for end-stage liver disease due to GSD type IIIa, but afterward, he experienced worsening muscle pain and elevated enzyme levels linked to muscle involvement rather than the liver.
  • The increase in muscle symptoms post-transplant may be due to improved liver function which led to excess glucose in the muscle cells, and while a high-protein ketogenic diet was attempted, it did not significantly help the patient's muscle pain.

Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an ideal tool to study hierarchically assembled helicates of the form Li[LiLTi]. Internally bound and external lithium ions can be well distinguished by solution- or solid-state NMR spectroscopy and dimerization constants of the monomer/dimer equilibrium can be easily determined in solution. Averaged dimerization constants can be estimated in case of statistical mixtures of helicates formed from mixtures of ligands.

Background: The combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin (gem/cis) with the anti-PD-L1-antibody durvalumab was recently approved as first line therapy for biliary tract cancer (BTC) based on the results of the TOPAZ-1 trial.

Objective: We aim to analyse the feasibility and efficacy of the triple combination therapy in patients with BTC in a real-world setting and in correspondence with the genetic alterations of the cancer.

Methods: In this single-centre retrospective analysis, all patients with BTC and treated with durvalumab plus gem/cis from April 2022 to September 2023 were included.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) models offer great potential for predicting the muscle forces required to inform more detailed simulations of vertebral endplate loading in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In this work, simulations based on static optimization were compared with in vivo measurements in two AIS patients to determine whether computational approaches alone are sufficient for accurate prediction of paraspinal muscle activity during functional activities. We used biplanar radiographs and marker-based motion capture, ground reaction force, and electromyography (EMG) data from two patients with mild and moderate thoracolumbar AIS (Cobb angles: 21° and 45°, respectively) during standing while holding two weights in front (reference position), walking, running, and object lifting.
