Introduction: The goal of this study is to validate the accuracy of the 29-mRNA host response classifiers Inflammatix Bacterial-Viral-Non infected-3b (IMX-BVN-3b) and Severity-3b (IMX-SEV-3b) to identify bacterial and viral infections and to predict 30-day mortality in patients with suspected infections in the ED.

Methods: This prospective observational cohort study enrolled patients with suspected infections in a tertiary ED. IMX-BVN-3b was compared to clinically forced and consensus adjudicated bacterial/viral infection status and IMX-SEV-3b was compared to 30-day mortality.

Background: Phosphate is important for several metabolic functions and essential for bone mineralization. Sex-differences exist in the relation between serum phosphate and certain diseases. The reference interval for phosphate is age-adjusted in infants, but most institutions use the same intervals for adult men and women despite increasing evidence for age and sex-differences.

Aim: Follow-up for colorectal cancer (CRC) necessitates regular monitoring of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) at the hospital. Capillary home-based blood collection, including minimally invasive techniques such as lancet sampling or an automated upper arm device (TAP-II), has the potential to replace a significant portion of hospital-based blood sampling, thereby enhancing self-reliance and quality of life. The objectives of this study were to assess the feasibility, reliability and preference for CEA blood collection.

Article Synopsis
  • Model-informed precision dosing (MIPD) seeks to improve antibiotic treatment by using procalcitonin (PCT) levels as a biomarker for infection severity and antibiotic response.
  • This study analyzed data from the DOLPHIN trial and examined PCT levels in critically ill patients at three time points (day 1, day 3, day 5) to see if MIPD led to better outcomes compared to standard dosing.
  • Results showed no significant difference in PCT levels between MIPD and standard dosing groups, indicating that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of using PCT to guide antibiotic dosing.

FebriDx is a rapid point-of-care test combining qualitative measurements of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Myxovirus Resistance Protein A (MxA) using a disposable test device to detect and differentiate acute bacterial from viral respiratory tract infections. The goal of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of FebriDx in patients with suspected respiratory tract infections in the emergency department (ED). This was an observational cohort study, performed in the ED of an academic hospital.
