Background: The lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer in women with a germline mutation in BRCA1 and BRCA2 is not well established. In an international prospective cohort of female carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, the cumulative incidence of pancreatic cancer from age 40 until 80 years was estimated.

Methods: A total of 8295 women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation were followed for new cases of pancreatic cancer.

Otomastoiditis, an inflammatory condition affecting the middle ear and mastoid cells, poses significant risks for hearing impairment. This study aimed to analyze the clinical presentations, anatomical variations, and audiometric outcomes associated with acute and chronic otomastoiditis over a five-year period at the ENT Clinic of the Clinical County Emergency Hospital of Craiova. A retrospective clinical-statistical analysis was conducted on 145 patients aged 2 to 78 years, who were treated for otomastoiditis.

Background: Monocytes comprise subsets of classical, intermediate and non-classical monocytes with distinct anti- or pro-tumor effects in breast cancer (BC). They are modulated by estrogen, and can contribute to BC control by endocrine therapy in preclinical models.

Methods: To elucidate whether changes in monocyte subsets are associated with treatment and response, we investigated peripheral blood samples of 73 postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor (ER) positive BC, who received aromatase inhibitor therapy with or without the mucin-1 vaccine tecemotide in the ABCSG34 trial.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how low levels of HER2 expression affect breast cancer treatment outcomes and the success of hormone therapy in patients.
  • It analyzes data from a large international study called PALLAS, which included over 5,000 patients to see how HER2 status impacts survival rates and response to the drug palbociclib.
  • The research found that HER2-low levels are common and vary between countries, but HER2 status didn’t significantly change the success rate of hormone therapy in the patients.
