Antimicrobial prescribing practices for enteric bacterial infections in an integrated health care system, Wisconsin, 2004-2017.

Background: Few studies have evaluated antibiotic prescribing practices for bacterial enteric infections. Unnecessary antibiotics can result in adverse events and contribute to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. We assessed treatment practices among patients with laboratory-confirmed enteric infections in a regional healthcare system in Wisconsin, USA.

Opportunities for the informatics community to advance learning health systems.

Objectives: There is rapidly growing interest in learning health systems (LHSs) nationally and globally. While the critical role of informatics is recognized, the informatics community has been relatively slow to formalize LHS as a priority area.

Materials And Methods: We compiled results from a short survey of LHS leaders and American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) members, discussion from an LHS reception at the AMIA annual meeting, and a follow-up survey to inform priorities at the intersection of LHS and informatics.

Prenatal black carbon exposure and DNA methylation in umbilical cord blood.

Background/objectives: Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with adverse cardiometabolic outcomes in childhood. We previously observed that prenatal black carbon (BC) was inversely associated with adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipocytes, in early childhood. Changes to DNA methylation have been proposed as a potential mediator linking in utero exposures to lasting health impacts.
