Pharmacological treatment of social anxiety disorder: a meta-analysis.

Placebo-controlled trials have evaluated the efficacy of several medications in the treatment of social anxiety disorder but information regarding their relative efficacy is lacking. We compared the efficacy of medications systematically studied for the treatment of social anxiety disorder using meta-analytic techniques. The methodology included a database search of articles published between January 1980 and June 2001 and manual searches of bibliographies in published manuscripts.

Increased levels of IL-15 mRNA in relapsing--remitting multiple sclerosis attacks.

IL-15 is a proinflammatory cytokine which has recently been implicated in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis, where it may play a role in the initiation and/or progression of the disease. We have used reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to study IL-15 mRNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from healthy controls and relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients in a stable phase of the disease and during a bout, both before and after corticosteroid treatment (CST). IL-15 mRNA expression was found to be similar in controls and stable patients.

Transthyretin Tyr77 familial amyloid polyneuropathy: a clinicopathological study of a large kindred.

More than 40 point mutations (producing different clinical manifestations) have been described in diverse points of the plasma protein transthyretin (TTR). The Met30 is considered the most common mutation, the Tyr77 mutation being the second most prevalent. However, data from patients with this late mutation are scarce, and usually come from isolated case reports or tables.
