Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a condition marked by rising pressures in the pulmonary arteries, leading to serious health issues.
  • Recent research highlights the role of inflammation in the development and worsening of PAH, with specific viruses like SARS-CoV-2, HERV-K, and HIV being implicated.
  • This review aims to explore the relationship between these viruses and PAH to encourage research into new treatment options and potential therapeutic targets.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. RASA3 is a GTPase activating protein integral to angiogenesis and endothelial barrier function. In this study, we explore the association of RASA3 genetic variation with PH risk in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD)-associated PH and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

The efficiency of blood flowing from the heart depends on its electrical properties. Myocardial electrical activity is associated with generating cardiac action potentials in isolated myocardial cells and their coordinated propagation, which are mediated by gap junctions. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia which causes an aggressive disturbance in cardiac electromechanical function.

Existing evidence demonstrates that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) leads to psychiatric illness, despite its main clinical manifestations affecting the respiratory system. People with mental disorders are more susceptible to COVID-19 than individuals without coexisting mental health disorders, with significantly higher rates of severe illness and mortality in this population. The incidence of new psychiatric diagnoses after infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is also remarkably high.
