Millions of people worldwide are exposed to arsenic (As), a toxicant which increases the risk of various cancers, cardiovascular disease and several other health problems. Arsenic is a potent endocrine disruptor, including of the estrogen receptor. It was recently shown that environmental estrogen-receptor disruptors can affect the signaling of mast cells, which are important players in parasite defense, asthma and allergy.

Background: HIV infection is one of the leading causes of acquired heart disease. Because of its high diffusion, systematic echocardiographic monitoring has been proposed to exclude cardiovascular involvement in these patients. Unlabelled: Cardiological involvement in HIV infection is relatively rare but it presents important clinical aspects that are still open questions. We report our experience with HIV patients who underwent cardiological evaluation, Doppler echocardiography and follow-up.

Material And Method: We selected 127 patients (9%) on the basis of clinical suspicion of heart disease, taking them from the 1398 admitted for HIV infection between 1992 and 1995.
