Background: Monitoring of various clinical outcomes and parameters, such as lipid levels, is recommended in transgender individuals undergoing hormone therapies. However, comprehensive data to inform these recommendations is scarce.
Objective: This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize evidence from existing literature on the effect of exogenous hormone therapy on clinical and biochemical outcomes for transgender adolescents and adults.
IL-17, a pro-inflammatory cytokine produced mainly by Th17 cells, is involved in the immune response to fungal and bacterial infections, whereas its aberrant production is associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. IL-17 blocking antibodies like secukinumab (Cosentyx) have been developed and are used to treat conditions like psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Recently, the low molecular weight IL-17 inhibitor LY3509754 entered the clinic but was discontinued in Phase 1 due to adverse effects.

It functions through canonical SMAD-mediated processes and noncanonical pathways involving MAPK cascades, PI3K/AKT, Rho-like GTPases, and NF-κB signaling. This intricate signaling system is finely tuned by interactions between canonical and noncanonical pathways and plays key roles in both physiologic and pathologic conditions including tissue homeostasis, fibrosis, and cancer progression.

The two disease entities share common molecular pathophysiology and recent research has illuminated the how each promotes the other. Multiple imaging techniques have been developed to aid in the early and accurate diagnosis of each disease, and given the commonalities between the pathophysiology of the conditions, advances in imaging one disease have opened new avenues to study the other.
