Photodynamic therapy in 2D and 3D human cervical carcinoma cell cultures employing LED light sources emitting at different wavelengths.

Light of different wavelengths can be used to obtain a more profitable outcome of photodynamic therapy (PDT), according to the absorption bands of the photosensitizer (PS). Low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) are superficial lesions that can be treated with light of shorter wavelength than red because a large light penetration depth in tissue is not necessary. We report a comparative investigation performed to evaluate the efficacy of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of different wavelengths in the photodynamic treatment applied to both 2D and 3D HeLa cell spheroid cultures.

[Retinoic acid syndrome].

Retinoic acid syndrome still remains as the most significant complication of the differentiation treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Of unknown pathogenesis this syndrome is close but not absolutely related to hyperleukocytosis developed during treatment. It shares clinico-biological characteristics with three other known syndromes: adult respiratory distress syndrome, endotoxic shock and capillary leak syndrome.

Infection of guinea pigs with two strains of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

In order to study the lesions produced by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) adult guinea-pigs were inoculated intraperitoneally with 1000 PFU of the WE or the Armstrong strain of LCMV. The animals were sacrificed at 3, 7, 10 and 14 days p.i.

Protective effect of a low-dose of cyclophosphamide in experimental infection of guinea pigs with Junin virus.

Administration of cyclophosphamide (CY) to guinea pigs infected with a lethal strain of Junin virus (JV) delayed the time of death, with survival of a small number of animals. Virological studies showed a temporary decrease of virus concentration in blood and viscera shortly after the CY injection. In the pathological study no differences were found in the organic lesions present in CY-treated and nontreated animals, with the exception of the pulmonary alterations.
