Background: Worldwide, approximately 2 million children younger than 15 years of age are infected with multidrug-resistant (MDR) , with MDR tuberculosis developing in approximately 30,000 annually. Evidence from randomized, controlled trials on tuberculosis preventive treatment in persons exposed to MDR tuberculosis is lacking.

Methods: In this community-based, multisite, double-blind, cluster-randomized, placebo-controlled trial in South Africa, we assessed the efficacy and safety of levofloxacin as preventive treatment in children with household exposure to an adult with bacteriologically confirmed MDR pulmonary tuberculosis.

Purpose: Remote symptom monitoring (RSM) using electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROS) connects patients and health care teams between appointments. Patient-perceived benefits and drawbacks of RSM are well-known, but health care team members' perceptions are less clear.

Methods: Health care team members from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of South Alabama Health Mitchell Cancer Institute participated in semi-structured qualitative interviews to explore their experiences and perspectives on RSM benefits and limitations.

Pain and alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently co-occur, but the underlying neurobiology is not well-understood. Although many studies have reported disruptions in stress and reward cue-elicited neural reactivity and heightened alcohol craving in individuals with AUD, little is known about these constructs among patients who experience pain. Here, individuals with pain (Pain+, n = 31) and without pain (Pain-, n = 37) completed a well-validated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm involving stress (S), alcohol (A) and neutral (N) cue exposure with repeated alcohol craving assessments.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the past 40 years, around 40,000 Australians have undergone corneal transplants, primarily due to conditions like keratoconus and Fuchs' dystrophy, with increasing demand due to an aging population.
  • The global shortage of donor corneas is significant, with demand exceeding supply by 70 times, particularly in less-developed countries, prompting advancements in tissue banking and surgical techniques.
  • New strategies like organ culture for donor corneas, bespoke surgical methods, and cell culture technologies are improving tissue storage, reducing transplant requirements, and enhancing patient care for corneal conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined pneumococcal disease in internally displaced people (IDP) in Somaliland, revealing a 36% overall carriage rate, with 70% in children under 5.
  • Researchers found that 41% of strains carried were from the 10-valent PNEUMOSIL vaccine, potentially causing over half of the invasive diseases.
  • The results indicate that implementing pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) could significantly reduce the disease burden in this vulnerable population.
