Objective: To clarify the diagnosis of avulsion of the lateral palmar intercarpal ligament (LPICL), correlate avulsion of this ligament with lameness, determine the prevalence of avulsion of the LPICL in a hospital population, and evaluate the response to surgical removal of the avulsion fragment in horses.
Design: Retrospective study.
Animals: 37 horses with avulsion of the LPICL.
In this study, the radiographic and histologic appearance of lateral palmar intercarpal ligament (LPICL) avulsion in the horse was characterized. Thirty-seven horses with radiographic evidence of avulsion fragments originating from the medial palmar aspect of the ulnar carpal bone were examined. The dorsolateral to palmaromedial projection was useful for evaluating the size and shape of the avulsed bone fragment, and the dorsopalmar projection added information on the relative proximity of the fragment to its fracture bed.

A 6-hour-old alpaca cria was admitted for evaluation of respiratory distress since birth. Contrast radiography confirmed the presence of bilateral choanal atresia, and computed tomography (CT) evaluation was planned to aid in the surgical treatment. Due to deterioration in the cria's condition, euthanasia was performed prior to the CT examination.

The pig heart grows rapidly in the first few days after birth. We examined the effects of simvastatin, atorvastatin, and pravastatin on heart growth in piglets. After vehicle, 2 mg x kg(-1) x day(-1) simvastatin, 2 mg x kg(-1) x day(-1) atorvastatin, or 4 mg x kg(-1) x day(-1) pravastatin were administered orally for 6 days, the thoracic cavity was opened, and the heart was removed under pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg ip) anesthesia.

These measurements are limited by the heterogeneity of the cells and the stability of the preparation. The hypothesis of the present study was that isolated cultured myocytes would offer much less cellular heterogeneity and a more prolonged period to explore the actions of anabolic agents.
