Article Synopsis
  • In 2022, researchers observed gray bats with notable fur loss (alopecia), indicating potential health issues related to reproductive stages and other stress factors.
  • In 2023, an experiment was conducted to assess alopecia's prevalence, severity, and associated ectoparasites in gray bats, with findings revealing no mites causing fur loss and different prevalence rates between genders.
  • The study showed that lactating female bats tend to experience more severe alopecia compared to males, and no significant body condition difference was found between bats with and without fur loss, suggesting the need for further research on stress and nutritional support for these bats.

Emerging infectious diseases are increasingly recognized as a significant threat to global biodiversity conservation. Elucidating the relationship between pathogens and the host microbiome could lead to novel approaches for mitigating disease impacts. Pathogens can alter the host microbiome by inducing dysbiosis, an ecological state characterized by a reduction in bacterial alpha diversity, an increase in pathobionts, or a shift in beta diversity.

The Brillouin sphere is defined as the smallest sphere, centered at the origin of the geocentric coordinate system, that incorporates all the condensed matter composing the planet. The Brillouin sphere touches the Earth at a single point, and the radial line that begins at the origin and passes through that point is called the singular radial line. For about 60 years there has been a persistent anxiety about whether or not a spherical harmonic (SH) expansion of the external gravitational potential,, will converge beneath the Brillouin sphere.

Throughout the last two decades, research on poly-victimization (PV) has evolved from examinations of a core set of past-year victimization types in youth samples to investigations of a broad range of victimization types experienced during variable time intervals in diverse samples of varying ages. As the concept of PV expands, greater clarity regarding the definition and measurement of PV is needed to advance understanding of its risk and protective factors as well as its associated outcomes. This scoping review aimed to (a) identify approaches used to operationally define and measure PV across studies and (b) synthesize empirical findings concerning risk factors and outcomes associated with PV.
