Mitral Valve Replacement for Enlarged Libman-Sacks Endocarditis in a Patient with Persistent Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome and Recurrent Stroke: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Anticardiolipin antibodies in patients with Libman-Sacks endocarditis (LS) are indicative of comorbid antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and can result in cerebral infarctions. We describe a case of LS and primary APS with recurrent cerebral infarctions despite anticoagulation treatment. The patient underwent surgery for enlarged LS vegetation with high titers of antiphospholipid antibodies.

Age and composition of the thrombus retrieved by mechanical thrombectomy from patients with acute ischemic stroke are associated with revascularization and clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Understanding the composition of stroke thrombi retrieved by mechanical thrombectomy is essential to clarify the pathogenesis of stroke. However, it is difficult to evaluate thrombus composition precisely and objectively. Immunohistochemical staining was used to evaluate thrombus composition and age.

Difficulties in providing genetic consultations by public health nurses in Japan.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to identify the topics that Japanese public health nurses (PHNs) find difficult during genetic consultations and to identify the relationships between these difficulties and PHNs' genetic education.

Methods: We conducted a mail survey delivered to PHNs employed by local Japanese governmental agencies in the Tokyo metropolitan area, between July and October 2015. The self-administered questionnaire queried the (1) experience with genetic consultation, (2) perceived difficulties in genetic consultation, (3) genetics education background, and (4) demographics.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer with long-term survival with lenvatinib therapy and preservation of laryngeal function after one-stage reconstruction: A case report.

Laryngotracheal reconstruction is performed to treat locally advanced thyroid carcinoma invading the larynx and/or trachea. The reconstructive technique varies. The present report describes the case of a 71-year-old female patient who underwent surgery for thyroid carcinoma involving the larynx.

Influence of the 5'-terminal sequences on the 5'-UTR structure of HIV-1 genomic RNA.

The 5'-UTR of HIV-1 genomic RNA is known to form specific structures and has important functions. There are three 5'-terminal sequences, G1, G2 and G3, with different localizations in the cell and virion particles as well as different efficiencies in translation and reverse transcription reactions. In the present study, the structural characteristics of the joint region between the TAR and PolyA stems was analysed, and it was found that small differences in the 5'-terminus affect the conformational characteristics of the stem-loop structures.
