Aim: The presence of esophageal varices has been reported to be a prognostic factor in patients with compensated hepatitis viral C induced cirrhosis. We studied the prognostic value of hepatic venous pressure gradient in addition to epidemiological and clinical parameters in these patients.
Methods: Among patients with Child-Pugh A hepatitis C induced cirrhosis, prospectively followed in two Parisian centres, 100 had measurement of occluded and free hepatic venous pressures.
A possible hepatotoxicity of cigarette smoke has been recently suggested by epidemiological and experimental studies. Our aim was to study the possible relationships between smoking and liver fibrosis and activity in patients with chronic hepatitis C. A cross-sectional study was performed in a group of 310 patients with chronic hepatitis C consecutively hospitalized for their first liver biopsy.

A cross-sectional study has been conducted in 233 chronic hepatitis C virus carriers. Weekly self-reported alcohol consumption (SRAC) was evaluated, serum HCV RNA levels were measured by a branched DNA technique (Quantiplex 2.

Methods: A cohort of 384 European cirrhotic patients was enrolled at seven tertiary referral hospitals and followed up for a mean period of 5 years.
The pathogenic mechanisms that lead to chronic hepatitis C are unknown. As hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been shown to induce T cell response, we assessed whether a particular T lymphocyte subset could be preferentially detected in the liver of patients with chronic hepatitis C in relation to viraemia or HCV genotypes. The immunophenotypes of liver-derived lymphocytes were analysed in 26 patients by flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry.
