Article Synopsis
  • 5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is given before surgery to help identify tumors but can sometimes cause low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • A case involving an 83-year-old man showed that after taking 5-ALA and his usual medications, he experienced hypotension, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis from a cerebral infarction.
  • While 5-ALA may have contributed to his condition, the authors suggest that other factors, like the doses of his medications, could also be involved in the development of the infarction.
