Neuronal A kinase anchor protein (AKAP) homologs, such as AKAPs 75 and 150, tether cAMP-dependent protein kinase II (PKAII) isoforms to the postsynaptic cytoskeleton, thereby creating target sites for cAMP action. These AKAPs, which bind regulatory subunits (RIIs) of PKAII, are also expressed in certain non-neuronal cells. Non-neuronal cell lines that stably express wild type and mutant AKAP75 transgenes were generated to investigate the extraneuronal function of AKAPs.

The effects of light, 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (APB), and kainic acid on rat retinal gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic transmission were studied by measuring levels of retinal GABA following subcutaneous injection of gabaculine, an irreversible inhibitor of GABA-transaminase. Post-gabaculine levels of retinal GABA in light-exposed rats were significantly greater than those in rats held in darkness. The synaptic mechanism of this effect of light was examined by measuring post-gabaculine levels of retinal GABA in rats placed into either lighted or darkened conditions after receiving unilateral intravitreal injections of APB, a glutamate analogue that selectively decreases the activity of ON synaptic pathways in the retina.

Cell-free extracts of Ureaplasma urealyticum strains Pi and T960 (CX8) (serovars 6 and 8, respectively) metabolized inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi). The inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) activity was greatest with Mg2+ as cofactor, but Mn2+ acted as a poor substitute. The PPases of the two serovars differed electrophoretically.

Morphine stimulates food consumption in the land snail Helix aspersa. This stimulation of food consumption can be blocked by naloxone, the potent opiate antagonist. In addition, this opiate-induced food consumption exhibits tolerance by the sixth day of treatment.
