Article Synopsis
  • In Kenya, obstetric hemorrhage is a major cause of maternal deaths, particularly postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), prompting the introduction of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) as a solution for areas with unreliable cold chain infrastructure for uterotonics.
  • A mixed-methods study involving 171 healthcare providers and 19 policymakers assessed knowledge and experiences with HSC, revealing high administration rates and awareness of protocols among HCPs.
  • The study concluded that HSC's introduction significantly benefits the healthcare sector by minimizing cold chain challenges, and policymakers advocate for further budget allocation to support its use.

Introduction: Hospital acquired infections (HAI) or infections acquired in a hospital setting significantly increase morbidity and mortality, prolong hospital stay and increase healthcare costs. Factors like malnutrition and irrational use of antibiotics in a resource limited setting contribute to poor outcome in children. Thus a retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken to study the different types of HAI in children, the different organisms causing them and their sensitivity to different antimicrobials so as to inform appropriate empirical antimicrobial therapy initiation and thus prevent antimicrobial resistance in the region.
