Pharmacological treatment of obesity is passing through many changes in the last decades; different agents have been approved, and newer options are leaning towards higher efficacy and a more favourable safety profile; however, medications approved for a longer time are still available and useful for many patients. This document is an 2024 Update Position Statement of Specialists from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM), with the aim of reviewing all the approved medications for the management of obesity in Brazil (sibutramine, orlistat, liraglutide, semaglutide and bupropion/naltrexone fixed dose), with the addition of tirzepatide, that is approved in other countries and likely approved soon in Brazil. The review is focused on efficacy, safety profile and the impact of drugs (based on existing studies) on different comorbidities.

The EDA-5 was translated from English to Portuguese, followed by a cross-cultural adaptation for use in Brazil and Portugal. Two independent translators worked on the Brazilian and European Portuguese versions, which were then reviewed to create a harmonized version. This version was back-translated into English and approved by the original author.

Recent developments in optical imaging techniques, particularly multi-photon excitation microscopy that allows studies of biological interactions at a deep cellular level, have motivated intensive research in developing multi-photon absorption fluorophores. Biological tissues are optically transparent in the near-infrared region. Therefore, fluorophores that can absorb light in the near-infrared (NIR) region by multi-photon absorption are particularly useful in bio-imaging.

Optic nerve (ON) injury causes blindness in adult mammals as their retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) cannot regenerate axons. However, amphibian RGC axons do not experience the same regenerative failure. Studying the regeneration process of the ON in amphibians holds profound implications for regenerative medicine and human health.
