Isolated limb perfusion for the management limb threatening soft tissue sarcomas: The role of histological type on clinical outcomes.

Background: Hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (HILP) is an effective neoadjuvant treatment to avoid amputation in patients with locally advanced extremity soft tissue sarcomas (STS). We aimed to investigate whether STS histological type plays a role in predicting clinical outcomes.

Methods: This study reports a retrospective analysis of 125 patients with limb threatening STS (liposarcoma, n = 41; malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, n = 20; leiomyosarcoma, n = 20; miscellany, n = 44), who underwent HILP from 1990 through 2015 at our institution.

Biphasic solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit with distant metastases.

The aim of this study is to report the first case of biphasic solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the orbit with documented histological transformation and metastatic diffusion. We describe a case of a 23-year-old Caucasian man with recurrent SFT of the right orbit with intracranial invasion. The patient underwent surgical tumor removal via a right fronto-orbital approach.

Incidence of soft tissue sarcoma and beyond: a population-based prospective study in 3 European regions.

Background: The objectives of this study were to measure the incidence of sarcomas, including viscerally sited tumors that are not reported in cancer statistics, and to draw explanatory clues from a large and reliable sarcoma incidence data set.

Methods: Cases of sarcomas regardless of primary site (except bone and joints) were collected during 2 years in 3 European regions totaling approximately 26,000,000 person-years. The sources used were pathology reports and hospital discharges forms.

miRNApath: a database of miRNAs, target genes and metabolic pathways.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate target gene expression and hence play important roles in metabolic pathways. Recent studies have evidenced the interrelation of miRNAs with cell proliferation, differentiation, development, and diseases. Since they are involved in gene regulation, they are intrinsically related to metabolic pathways.

The role of preoperative ultrasound scan in detecting lymph node metastasis before sentinel node biopsy in melanoma patients.

Background And Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of preoperative ultrasound (US) scanning in identifying lymph node metastasis before sentinel node biopsy (SNB), we conducted a prospective study on 125 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma (CM).

Methods: We prospectively enrolled 125 patients with >1 mm thick CM and candidate for SNB. Preoperatively, patients underwent US scanning of regional lymphatic basins and FNA of suspected lymph nodes (LN).
