Fungi have proved to be useful sources of compounds with antineoplastic properties. Although several metabolites isolated from species of the genus Omphalotus have shown cytotoxic effects on tumor cell lines. Few works have studied Omphalotus nidiformis.

Mexican and Hispanic children in Mexico and the United States, respectively, have the highest incidence and worst outcomes of pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) compared with other racial/ethnic groups. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) is an intranuclear DNA polymerase normally present on immature lymphocytes (TdT-positive) and distinguishes ALL from mature lymphoid malignancies. We performed a multisite retrospective study to determine the incidence of TdT-negative precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pre-B ALL) among Mexican, Caucasian, and US-born Hispanic children to correlate TdT expression with patient characteristics and known prognostic factors.

Objectives: Infection with high-risk human papillomavirus is required to develop cervical cancer. Some viruses modulate the Fas/FasL signaling to evade the immune response; the role of these molecules in cervical cancer is not clear. In this study, we measured the expression levels of Fas and FasL mRNA, soluble proteins, and cell surface proteins in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and cervical cancer in relation to healthy women, to gain new insights into the role of Fas/FasL in cervical cancer development.

Article Synopsis
  • Mushrooms may have health benefits, specifically showing potential anti-cancer properties against cervical cancer cell lines HeLa and SiHa while being less effective on non-cancerous HaCaT cells.
  • Both mycelium extracts demonstrated similar protein patterns and had protease activity, leading to a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on cancer cells.
  • The cytotoxicity observed was primarily linked to autophagy rather than apoptosis, and the mechanisms did not involve changes in the protein expression of p53, indicating alternative pathways in inducing cell death.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a low-grade inflammatory condition with abnormalities in the immune response mediated by T lymphocytes and macrophages. Drug repositioning for immunomodulatory molecules is an attractive proposal for treating T2D. Nitazoxanide (NTZ) is a broad-spectrum drug with promising immunomodulatory effects.
